How To Add A Zipper To A Finished Bag

There are quite a few ways to put a zipper into a handbag lining. This method is a really easy way to do it. Later we'll try some of the other, more complicated ways.

Kickoff, collect the supplies y'all'll need:

1/2 grand of fabric for the lining.

1/4 thousand of material for the pocket.

1 zipper (I'g using a 9″ zipper).

Pair of scissors.

Rotary cutter.

Pattern piece for a handbag lining.

Pins.

A manus sewing needle.

Thread to match or coordinate with the lining.

Fabric pencil or tailor's chalk.

A seam ripper.

18″ transparent ruler.

Cutting mat.

Get-go, cut out ane of your two lining pieces, post-obit your design. I used the pattern slice from the Absolute Beginner Lined Tote project that we did a couple of weeks ago. Cut the other pattern piece 2″ longer than the pattern. Use this bigger piece for the attachment installation.

These dots marker your attachment placement. Lay your zipper there centered betwixt the dots. Now mensurate from each end of the attachment to the edge of the fabric, similar this:

This measurement is 4-ane/2″. Add an inch to this measurement, and then 5-1/2″. Now cutting two strips from the same material, measuring 2″ X 5-1/2″. Put the zipper on your piece of work surface, right side upward. Line up i of the short sides of the strip, correct side downward, with one of the ends of the zipper and pin into place, like this:

Exercise the aforementioned on the other end of the zipper and take them to your sewing auto. Line upward your presser foot with the edge of the fabric and make a seam beyond the short stop of the strip and the zipper, similar this:

Repeat with the other finish. When you are finished it volition expect like this:

Set the attachment bated for a moment. Take your pocket textile, cutting ii squares that are near 2″ wider than the attachment, and no longer than your bottom slice of lining fabric. I fabricated my squares(rectangles, really) ten-one/2″ X 13″.

At present take your zipper and identify it right side down on your work surface. Plow nether the edge of your pocket material and pin it forth either side of the zipper, like this:

Turn it over and fold down the peak half of the pocket:

On each edge of the pocket, where it is stitched to the lining, interruption some of the stitches with a seam ripper, so you have virtually an inch free on either edge.

In one case yous have a gratis edge on each side, fold in your lining fabric on all sides, and pivot in place,so the pocket is exposed, like this:

Accept it to your automobile, with the standard presser foot in identify, sew along the 3 open up edges of the pocket.

Now, the merely thing left to practise is to repair those stitches that you broke earlier. With your standard presser foot, line upwards your needle exactly over your previous stitches and summit run up over the broken section, like this:
